Pat Downey is the Founder and Owner of GRIDIRON TRAINING, and is a former NFL player with the Washington Redskins. Pat grew up on the North Shore of Boston, in Beverly, Massachusetts. He attended Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody, Massachusetts where he was a two-time all-star and MVP in football, and school record holder in track & field. Pat went on to attend Worcester Academy as a Post-Graduate student and was named MVP of the 9-1 Worcester Academy Hilltopper Football Team. He was also named to the prestigious Board of Monitors as a student.
Upon graduation from Worcester Academy, Pat received a Full-Athletic Scholarship to play football at Division 1-AA, University of New Hampshire. At UNH, Pat was a 4-year starter at Center and was named Team Captain in 1997. He would go onto become a 2-time All-Star at UNH earning First Team All-New England, First Team All-East and First Team All Atlantic-10 Honors. Pat signed with the San Diego Chargers of the NFL as a Rookie Free Agent in 1998. He would end up having a seven year Pro football playing career in the NFL, NFL Europe and Arena Football League. Pat spent three seasons in the AFL as a Center. He was in Training Camp with the New England Patriots and spent a season with the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe. He later went onto play one season with the Atlanta Falcons on their Practice Squad, and then signed to the active roster with the Washington Redskins where he stayed in 2002 and 2003.
After retiring from Pro Football as a player in 2004 from a failed physical with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pat became a Pro Football Coach in the Arena Football League for Jon Bon Jovi’s Philadelphia Soul. During his time with the Soul, he served as Head Strength & Conditioning Coach and later became the Assistant Head Coach and Line Coach. During his time with the Soul, they broke a franchise record for most wins in a season, and qualified for the Play-Offs during two consecutive seasons.
As a former Professional Strength & Conditioning Coach in the AFL, Pat coached and trained several former NFL Draft Picks and Super Bowl Champions including former Oakland Raiders Safety Johnnie Harris, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Clint Stoerner, San Diego Chargers Offensive Lineman Phil Bogle and former Baltimore Ravens Draft Pick, Mike Mabry.
Pat is currently the Director of Football Operation for The Program, LLC. An Athletic Leadership and Development Company based out of Quincy, Massachusetts. Pat trains on leadership development with former and current United States Special Operations Marines. Pat and the Program staff work with Collegiate athletic teams from around the country including Brown University Football, Harvard Men’s Ice Hockey, Penn State Women’s Field Hockey and Merrimack College Lacrosse.
Pat resides in Swampscott, Massachusetts with his Wife Andrea and their three children Jackson(6), Peyton(4) and Colt(1).
